Wistful Voyage

Reflections dance across the bay
Sparkling through the ice glass sea
Over waves aloft the mizzen
Casting back brilliant prisms

Tranquil solace well past twilight
Until her lustre fades to moonlight
A bittersweet farewell to land
To cerulean skies and diamond sands

Dedicated to my Great, Great Grandfather Frank Johnson,
English Poet and Author of Lashed To The Mizzen

FRANK JOHNSON, English born poet

  11. I must admit I had to look up mizzen to find out it is a sail on a boat. I'd say your great, great grandfather seems to have a hand in the eloquence and essence of this verse. Could you feel him near, my dear?

  12. the last lines of each stanza are the highlights for me...your creativity shines in those two lines...while opening in beauty it is familiar, maybe that works but i might kick it up a notch...

  13. (your blog page is stunning)

Your seafaring metaphors flow through this poem with ease, setting a farewell to the currents with beauty and grace.

I read all poetry out loud because the voice gives the words depth and often I find new little nuances that escape the voice in my head. In doing so, I found that the double spacing of the presentation, though lovely, forced exaggerated pauses in thought, more than what a normal line break would do. The blend of free verse, rhyme and near-rhyme works for you here. I like finding bits of rhyme in free verse if it fits the theme in an unforced effect.

Truly lovely. Thank you for offering this poem for dVerse crit night. I enjoyed reviewing your work.

  17. Quite a tribute to your grandfather - a rhyme for a poet and employing a word from his title to harken back to it.

The overall form makes a good metaphor for the end of life and dying. I see the sail casting nets of light over all who knew him and watching as he sails away and all this with overtones of a Viking funeral. Very beautiful. Gay

  18. Oh my, I like your interpretation of my poem...When I wrote this,I could sense my G G Grandfathers spirit encouraging me. I say this because the words manifested quite effortlessly. Plus I had a beautiful sense of calm while writing this piece. I always appreciate your comments Gay, Thank you so much...
