Bring in the Clowns

The annual festival of clowns
left the children wide-eyed with wonder
Totally mesmerized by the production
the kids devoured candy-floss by the
shovelfuls, as if brainwashed
Admittedly, I was tempted to take part in the
sweet sensations myself
The jovial jesters performed pantomime
as if without a care in the world
Despite their gawkiness, they were turning cartwheels
with high-spirited exuberance, protecting their true
identity behind the guise of a masked harlequin
The curtain fell after the show-stopping finale
as the crowd sent back a loud echo
of over-wound applause

Over at Dodge Writes, JL is offering up the USE THESE WORDS Prompt... Today's words are WIDE-EYED, ADMITTEDLY, SHOVELFUL, BRAINWASHED, MASKED, FESTIVAL, PROTECTED, OVERWOUND, GAWKINESS, JOVIAL...The rules are you must use 8 of the 10 words as they are given in prose or poetry form, I managed to use all ten.
