Poor Little Lambs

This is my first attempt at posting for

Short Story Slam Week 6-Children's Literature

Country Nights with Dog and Elephant by ManicD Daily

Eddie, the baby elephant, was shivering and cold when Laney, the tiny Lamb dog, found him in lost in the woods one cold dark autumn night.

“Laney, what's that song you’re humming?" asked Eddie.

“Oh…it’s just a song that my mother always sings to me when I’m scared, like you are now, Eddie.”

“Laney, I am scared. I miss my Mom.”

“Don’t be afraid, Eddie. I’m right here beside you," Laney offered, trying hard to sound convincing.

“Laney, are there words to it?"

“To what?" asked Laney.

“To the song that your Mom sings to you.”

“Oh! Ya, sure there are words, Eddie.”

“Laney, can you sing them please?

With that, Laney turned and looked straight past Eddie’s long elephant trunk directly into his sad blue eyes. She could see that Eddie was still very frightened. Maybe even more frightened than she herself was.
Laney turned and gently wrapped her tiny lamb-like tail around Eddie’s large trunk and started walking across the meadow under the star-filled night sky.
Then, with her wee small voice, Laney, the Bedlington terrier, sang her Mother’s song for her newfound friend, Eddie the elephant.

Little Laney and Eddie walked through the dark of night into the wee small hours of early dawn.
The morning sun brought some comfort for the two friends, for it left the scary night behind them.
As they stood side-by-side in the clearing, loud singing off in the distance startled them.
Laney and Eddie listened closely as the voices approached.
As they looked toward the hillside, Laney and Eddie could not believe their eyes. Singing the lamb song together were Laney and Eddie’s Mamas. Both Laney and Eddie ran to them, eagerly wanting to share their brave escapades from the night before.

Suddenly out of nowhere, with a boisterous voice, Eddie announces:

“Ya see, Laney, I told you there was nothing to be scared of!”

The two relieved Moms looked at Eddie and Laney, then at each other before bursting into laughter
